More than 30,000 children are in foster care in the state of Texas.

There are many things to consider prior to making the decision to pursue adoption or foster care domestically. It’s good to take your time and make sure this is the right fit for your family. In most cases, you may be able to adopt whether you’re married, single, or in a committed relationship. You don’t need to own your own home, have children already, be young, wealthy, or a stay-at-home parent to adopt.

To adopt a foster child from Texas, the state requires you to be licensed/certified by an agency contracted with the state of Texas. If you are matched with a child from Texas, Texas would first make sure you have completed similar training and then require the agency to provide 6 months of post-adoption supervision as required in Texas.

There are no fees to adopt from the foster care system regardless of which agency you choose. Every agency has access to the same pool of children, all of whom are in DFPS care.

For those living outside of Texas, you will want to identify a local agency. A list of the representative agency for each state can be found here.
